About Us
Locavore Network
While growing up during the 50's and 60's, we used to drive down to the southeastern part of Kansas to buy peaches from orchards around Wichita. About two years ago, I made a futile attempt to find any of those orchards via an internet search and soon discovered a tremendous void of information in regards to small farms across the country.
Certainly there were many websites (more than 300) that had regional lists or a database of a particular commodity, but about the only thing those sites offered was an inconsistent basic contact form. There were absolutely no sites that offer the Web 2 experience of interactive communication between growers and consumers on a nationwide basis, and none of the sites really appeal to consumers.
Additionally, we have seen that Marketing the "old fashioned" way via print ads or radio and television spots, is becoming a thing of the past. Using the old marketing methods, the high cost/low return per reader or per listener becomes a prohibitive expense for small growers or seasonal producers. So with those thoughts in mind, I decided to utilize my more than 28 years experience in the fresh Produce industry to design a site that would facilitate the sourcing of locally grown or produced product and to provide Web 2 enabled communication tools for Locavores across the country. Locavore Network provides an easily searched database of more than 15,000 growers, producers wineries and restaurants across the country.
We have the following goals:
- To provide an online meeting place for Locavores, local Growers, Producers, Restaurants, Wineries and retail stores
- To facilitate the search for locally grown and produced product
- To provide Marketing tips for Grower and producers
Please take the time to look over the site and register in order to start interacting with the community.
We are looking for editors (and correspondents) in each state to help us find more growers as well as to provide us with local information regarding Farmers Markets, seasonality information and interesting local stories. If you are interested in participating in these activities please send an email to admin@locavorenetwork.com
