Tips for Growers and Producers
As a grower/producer, you probably prefer farming to all the other stuff, unfortunately marketing your crops is becoming an increasingly important and time consuming aspect of your business.
But the good news is that, due to the increasing interest for the "Locavore" movement, the marketing channels for your crops have expanded to include any or all of the possibilities listed below.
- Internet presence
- Farmers Markets
- U-Pick / Pick Your Own
- Community Supported Agriculture(CSA)
- On-Farm Sales / Roadside Market
- Sales to Restaurants
- Sales to Retailers
- Value-Added Products
- Season Extension
- Cooperative Marketing/Campaigns
None of these marketing channels should be the ONLY method you utilize and each method may benefit from one of the others. Each of these channels may require a bit of a different approach. As an example, CSA members would most likely have a far different expectation of today's purchases than would a restaurant chef.
It is your task as a Marketer to understand the needs and wants of the prospective customers you have in each channel and to then convince them that your product is superior to those offered by your competitor.
Fortunately one of the best tools that is emerging for truely understanding your customers is the Internet...and specifically the "Web 2" activity that allows instant interactive communication between the Marketer and the Client.
Locavore Network provides you with the specific tools for active communication with your current and prospective clients. Our Spotlight services allow you, the Grower, to communicate via:
- Instant messages
- Private/ Invitation only Forums
- Group Emails
- Group online Chat
- Twitter broadcasts
- Your own Blog
- Your own dedicated Web page (Spotlight Page) to tell your story, post pictures, link to videos of your farm, post product availability and Google Maps.
