Frequently Asked Questions

I did not create the Profile that is on Locavore Network for my farm. How did my information get here?

Over the past three years, we searched the internet for publicly available information regarding local farms.
More than 350 lists and databases with partial information were found and reformatted. These lists were loaded into a database and the Profiles were created that you see listed on Locavore Network.
Since the launch of our site in 2009, we have had more than 1,000 growers sign on and update the original Profiles that we loaded.

My Farm name appears in the Grower and Producer list for my State, but the information does not show what I grow. How do I fix this?

The information that shows in your listing on the Grower and Producer page is automatically pulled directly from your Profile. To update the info, go to your Profile, click on the Edit tab, click on the Product Available tab and change the information in those fields.

I entered my farm information in a Profile, and submitted it. Everything shows up but when I search via the Search Near You/Proximity search my information is not there. Why?

Every four hours our database adds any new information it finds, re-sorts, re-indexes and submits the changes to all of the major search engines. So depending upon when you have entered your Profile information, it might take up to four hours to show up in the Proximity search.

I love the farm picture you have on your front page. Can you tell me more about it?

The picture was painted by Paul Buxman and he has graciously granted approval to post it on the Front Page of Locavore Network.

Paul is a Farmer and Artist who has has been farming and painting the San Joaquin Valley for over 40 years. His dedication to discovering sustainable farming methods have influenced people world wide. He has been the subject of many documentaries including National Geographic, PBS, Sixty Minutes, Bill Moyer, CBS Nightly News, etc

To see more of Paul's art, go to his on-line gallery - Paul Buxman

Click on Submit.

How do I set up a Profile on Locavore Network?

On the front page, click on the link that says "Create New Account"
Enter a user name you would like to use and enter your email address

Below that you will see the word "profile" with three tabs
On the "basics" tab, enter your Farm Name where it says Title (this is the title of your farm profile)

Click on the link that says Location and enter your info. this will create a Google Map entry for you

Click on the Business Info tab and fill in as much information as possible.

Each one of those information fields is indexed in our database to allow you to be found
via many search engines. Do the same on the product information tab. The more information you provide, the easier it will be for customers to find you.

Don't worry about making mistakes. You can change the information as often as you like.

How can I change the information listed in my Profile?

To update your Profile information, after signing in, you must first go to your Profile page. There are several methods to get there, but we will go through the most basic. On the Home page, in the Menu section in the left column, click on the menu choice "My Account". You will see your User Name in Bold at the top of the page with four tabs under it.

Just below that you will see the word "Profile", again in bold. Under the word "Profile" you will see the words "View" and "Edit". Assuming that you have not yet adjusted your Profile, click on the word "View". This will take you to a page that shows your current Profile as well as a "View" tab and an "Edit" tab.

Click on the Edit tab and you will now see three tabs for entering information (Basics, Business Info, Product Information).

Basics tab

Contains the access to Location which allows you to enter information that will show on Google maps

Business Info tab

Contains the following fields:
All the fields here are optional, but the more you fill out, the easier it will for consumers to decide if you are a business that they want to deal with.

  • Image - allows you to upload a picture or logo that will show on your Profile. It is important that you use this field, under the Profile section, to upload your image or logo file. This is the ONLY place that the Profile page pulls images from.
  • Business or Farm Name - This can be different than your User name
  • Contact Name - The person you want to show as the primary contact for your business
  • Business Type - To select multiple choices here, hold down your ctrl key and click on each of the selections you want to appear
  • All the address fields - These may be the same as what you have entered into the Location fields under basics, but they do not feed Google Maps. Some users wanted to list their mailing address in the Profiles and some users do not want to provide Google with the location, so we have to maintain two separate address areas.
  • Business Description - Enter any information that makes your operation different than your competitor's. What compelling reason can you provide for consumers to by from you?
  • Sales Method and Growing Method - Both of these can be multiple selections using the ctrl key and mouse click
  • Other Comments - Enter other interesting things about your operation such as CSA subscription information, or when your crops will be ready, etc.

Be sure and click on the Submit button before moving to a different page.

Product Information tab

This is the page that will provide the searches engines with exactly what product you offer. Listed below each data field are brief directions on how to fill them out.

Listed on the Product page are some of the most important fields in your profile. It is EXTREMELY important to list the names of the product that you grow or produce. These fields feed the search results found in your State's Grower and Producer list. In the Fruit and Vegetable field, list the actual fruit and vegetable items that you grow. Do the same for any other Product field. Most searches on the internet are for a specific product name like "Corn" or "Peaches"... NOT for "Vegetables" or "Fruit". The same goes for Meat, list "Beef" or whatever product you have, not just "Meat".

Be sure and click on the Submit button before moving to a different page.

Now go to your State information tab, click on the Growers and Producer tab, and enter a product name in the appropriate box. Your Farm should be in one of the search results.

Does it look the way you want it to look? If not, head back to the Product page and change any information you want.

Why should I register my business or farm on LocavoreNetwork.com?

LocavoreNetwork.com is the most complete online database of Growers, Producers, Shippers, Wineries and Locavores.  Registration is completely FREE, and being listed on the site provides exposure to more than 15,000 registered individuals.

Will all the information that I have entered in my Account be displayed on LocavoreNetwork.com?

No!

Information that is entered into your "Account" section is not public and will not be shared with anyone unless you elect to do that.

However, ALL of the information that is entered into your "Profile" section is public and will be shown when anyone clicks on and views your "Profile".

Locavore Network is built on an advanced database that indexes every piece of information in your "Profile" and it uses that information to provide internal search results and reports such as the individual State grower lists and Proximity search.

Additionally, the "Profile" information is checked multiple times each day by all of the major search engines to enable internet based searches to find your specific information.
